The Same Mistakes started life in Winter 2015, when I was music making in Kunming, China. I walked passed a shop front of TVs, and on the news were protesters in Trafalgar Square, marching against proposed airstrikes in Syria. My diary entry for the day reads; "Saw a TV Screen of placards waving in Trafalgar Square, oh boy what have we done now?" In the following year, as Britain voted to leave the EU and Trump rose to power, I read back through my notebooks from China and cemented the song's lyrics. I finished 'The Same Mistakes' with my songwriting friend Findlay Napier, and it was recorded during the 'Hey Sammy' sessions. I think about this song with each new news story, and I'm very pleased to finally share it with you.
lyrics
The Same Mistakes
(Bella Hardy & Findlay Napier)
It's the same mistakes we're making, It’s another escalation
The same battles that we’re fighting, The same people who are dying
Expectations, aspirations, Sleepless nights and warring nations
It's the same mistakes we're making, It’s the same mistakes
It's the same mistakes we're making, The same feeling that we're having
From the Five Lakes and the Four Seas, To the western towns and cities
From the fighting in the chatrooms, To the guns in children's classrooms
It's the same mistakes we're making, It’s the same mistakes
You can’t ask for love, You can’t ask for love
You can’t ask for love while you hand out hate
You can’t disown the monsters you create
It's the same mistakes we're making, In our name 'cos that's the system
It's in fear and it's control, And trying to make sense of it all
And you may say that's just human, But I don't think we're passed saving
It's the same mistakes we're making, It’s the same mistakes
You can’t ask for love, You can’t ask for love
You can’t ask for love while you hand out hate
You can’t disown the monsters you create
Oh boy, oh no, what have we done now?
Boy, oh no, what have we done now?

Thanks for the beautiful music Karine and Dave. it's been a while since I've felt so emotional listening to a new album. Every lyric is so beautifully supported by the piano parts. Laura-Beth Salter
